Lol Yip...Seems a war there was......Yes Gremlin, it is a 1878 Victoria Brittania 3 Pence coin I found in the area where the other stuff was. The veld is quite big and people are making a dump heap of it. Hope to get around to it again before all things gets messed up by inconsidderate people. :'(

It was a good one. I will definately return there as there is a lot of ground still to cover. This weekend it will be in and around Pretoria for me. Heard about an old Indian Cafe that was broken down years ago. Had a quick scan there and picked up an Teaspoon with markings "AH" in the front. Also some old bottle caps. It might be worth looking a bit more... ;D

Morning all and greetings here from Middelburg. Went back and re-hunted the site where I found the cartridges and buttons previously. And what would you know, some more of the same came out with yet more to be uncovered. I am lead to believe given the volume of spent .303 cartridges recovered thus far that there is more to this area that meets the eye. I can not believe that someone was merely sitting there in one area shooting senselessly at nothing out of pure boredome. I have not yet located the opposite side of the battle ground. Once this is established, I am sure some nice Boer artifacts from this battle will be uncovered. Lets hope.

This weekends finds:
79 x .303 Cartridges
2 x Live .303 Rounds
2 x .303 Bullet tips
1 x Unknown Bullet tip (Possibly Revolver)
7 x Military shirt buttons
3 x Large Military coat buttons
1 x Small Military coat button
Small Horse Shoe or Metal Shoe fitted on riding boots

All and all not a bad weekend. I might go there again today if I do not hit the ols concentration camp surrounding areas. Who knows what lies there waiting. Anyway, happy hunting all and as always - Coil to the Soil ;D ;) ;D

Well, after some Googling this morning I managed to find a Info piece giving some details historic to Middelburg and amongst things the location of the "Old Canon Blockhouse" on the Stofberg road. The blockhouse was believed to have housed a Canon overlooking the Middelburg town area. The blockhouse has since then been covered with rocks and a Beacon erected on top of it. Obviously curiosity hit me and I just had to go take a peek ::)

Wasn't there a long time but did manage to find some Brittish relics from the Boer was as well as some more modern stuff. What I like most about both the areas I am currently hunting around Kanonkop is that the modern world has not touched it much with very little modernday litter lying around.
[b1 x ]Brass Buckle
1 x Axe Head
1 x Live .303 Round
Some .303 Cartridges
A Bottle cap - Red with a Dragon sitting on a Castle - Lettering W & A GILBEY
3 x .303 projectiles
1 x Small Military shirt button
2 x Small Brittish Military Coat Buttons
A brass wheel - Possibly a Toy canon or wagon wheel
A shotgun shell
3 x Spent R1 blank cartridge[/b]

Anyway, I will probably go back later this afternoon and tomorrow morning if I do not hit my initial spot 1st. As always, Coil to the Soil everyone. ;)

This is definately a day I will never forget and the best way to end off my visit to Middelburg. Up to this far it yielded my best ever find. A 1989 Victoria Sovereign Golden Crown....I can not believe my eyes.....Absolutely Awsome....... ;D :P ;D ;D ;D
Anyway, herewith my finds for the day. I did the searching and my 12 year old son did the digging. He has to start learning somewhere.....

2 x Rusted British Boer War Mess Trays
1 x Axe Head
1 x Brass Cylinder - Suspected to be the rifle oil container / cleaning kit
7 x Live .303 Mk II Cordite Cartridges
33 x .303 Spent Cartridges
2 x .303 projectiles
3 x Small Military Shirt Buttons
2 x Small Military Coat Buttons
1 x Large Military Coat Button
And last but not least my Golden Victoria 1989 Crown minted in Melbourne.

What an absolute awsome day. Anyway as always.....Coil to the Soil......Happy huntings :P
