Can anyone rate this Metal Detector?

Sells for R2 500 on Gumtree (08.06.2015)

Electromann Metal Detector "Gold Digger" - 3.8 Inch LCD Screen, Sensitivity Adjustment, Detects Ferrous and Non Ferrous Metals

Metal Detector for standard and precious metals featuring a 3.8 inch LCD screen, advanced sensitivity calibration, a built-in flash light and more. Find metal objects, gold, silver or even pieces of history.

The “Gold Digger” metal detector was designed with exact specifications to fill the needs of the avid Treasure Hunter. Equipped with a 3.8 inch back-lit LCD screen displaying various information and a built in torch, illuminating the ground in front of you, the “Gold Digger” metal detector will make every hunting trip a great success. Adjust the sensitivity of the scanner manually if needed, select between ferrous metal search (Iron) and non-ferrous metal search (Gold, Silver, Copper) and use the auto calibration setting for the best possible results.

It is said Kanye West wrote a song about this detector praising it the following way - “It finds me money when I'm in need, Yeah it's a trifling friend indeed. Oh it's a gold digger way over town. That digs with me.” Easy to use, you will have fun with the “Gold Digger” from your first time out. Coins, rings, jewelry and pieces of history are all waiting to be found in your own backyard, public beaches, common walk trails and many other places.

I would not buy this machine. The write up makes it look all fancy, but in reality it is just a cheap chinese made (probably) detector. Just the fact that they are indicating that the max depth for this machine is 1.5m immediately tickles my BS radar. Even the best hobby Minelabs and Garretts cannot really go that deep. In reality a detector will on average only be effective approx to 10".

For R2500, I would rather look for a Bounty Hunter. They are still a named brand with some sort of reputation. This one on Gumtree for me is a no name brand. You have also got to be careful regarding scams. There are a lot of metal detector scams doing the rounds on Gumtree, OLX etc

This will only disappoint. Rather save the 2500 towards buying one of the entry-level Technetics or Fisher models. Anything that has "Underground" stuck in front of the words "Metal Detector" is telling you it's a piece of crap.

You are welcome. I am glad we could stop at least one person buying this sort of sub standard equipment

For that budget perhaps wait for the Minelab Go Find Series detectors which will be launched in South Africa very soon. Keep a look out on this site for special offers.

Hi Dave!

You got the message from some old hands : Tonny, Paul, Chris...Don't buy one of those cheap, fake Chinese  detectors.!
Better save up or buy a good one, proven by so many.A Minelab is a good detector, but there are other good brands on the marked!
cheers mate!

My first metal detector was a cheapie Chinese brand. It actually was not too bad while it lasted. Unfortunately the pinpoint button stopped working from overuse after a couple of months. I did find some jewelry as well as a real  'treasure' with it (more about that later  :P). I think I would actually recommend a cheapie detector to anyone who is just trying detecting out.
