Please advise on the correct Metal Detector
« on: October 22, 2019, 01:37 PM »
Hi there. Please help out a dad that needs to help his kid.

I want to purchase a Metal Detector for my 11 year old son.

He is an "archeologist" by nature, and loves digging and finding things. So now, we've moved onto the obvious next step, treasure!

I have very limited knowledge on the subject, and need some help.

  • Budget - 5K range
  • Application - General finding stuff on the beach, riverbeds etc
  • Waterproof coil would be great (searching in tidal pools etc) - No fully submersible, for now... (price!?)
  • Salt water capable (wet beach sand maybe)
  • Ability to detect gold - Yes he watched some youtube channels with stars in his eyes (I realise he won't become a gold miner, but let's try to entertain him if we can)

I have identified these two, from the limited knowledge that I have and could research in a few hours.

Garrit Ace 300 (On the shop bound to this forum)
Teknetics T2 (There's a 2nd hand one on Gumtree for roughly 5K)

I would really appreciate some input here.

Thanks!

I would wait for the Minelab Vanquish to arrive. Its already been announced we just waiting on the pricing and arrival dates on these machines.

It will be a baby Equinox in terms of technology (multi iq), will be great at the beach, coil waterproof and pricing (unknown yet) but should be around your budget as there will be 4 versions being released.

I will be keeping everyone advised as to when we receive the machines and the pricing.

We will be adding them to our online store as soon as they arrive at www.metaldetecting.co.za

Other option, the Minelab Go-Find series are great for kids, they really light and fold up small and compact.

Really good machines for the price but they do battle a bit with the wet sand and in the salt water, you would need to reduce sensitivity a lot in those areas which will result in loss of depth.

Will be great on land, on the dry sand at beach and fresh water (coil waterproof).

Thanks for the advice. I ended up going with the T2 after some youtube reviews. I think it will serve its purpose for what we are intending to start with.

Thanks.
