1965 coin value WTF
« on: April 22, 2014, 08:06 PM »
Does anybody know why the 1965 1 cent,50 cent and R1 coins are worth so much today? ,I have seen values of up to R2500.00 for the 1 cent piece and up to R55000.00 for a 50 cent coin....what makes these coins worth so much?

As far as my knowledge goes it is because it was the first year for the new coins (at that stage) and there was only a small number minted. Can't wait to see the date on these old brown coins when I find them but they are never 1965.
I do it the metal detecter way - swing it around like I just don't care.

Value mostly depends on the amount of coins printed or the amount of the specific coin printed in the specific year. The condition of the coin is also very important and a deteriorated coin is worth much less than one in mint condition.

Also some of the coins are printed in afrikaans some are in english - collectors go crazy for these 1965 coins also they still have the high amount of silver in them.  Anything 1965 has a good value to it

Got close!!!! Found a 1966 1 cent piece yesterday .My heart was in my throat while I rubbed the dirt of the date.Just makes no sense that someone would be prepared to pay up to R50 000.00 for a 1965 50 cent piece!

There are three rarities from the 1965 coins:
1965 R1 - Afrikaans,
1965 50c - English
1965 1c - Afrikaans

The mintage of these was 120, 50 and 1031 respectively.
(For comparison, in 1966, there were over 50 Million English 1c AND 50 million 1c Afrikaans minted, compared to the 1031 in 1965)

...So best you all go look through your finds now... LOL (I have)
